Course Description

This course is an introduction to writing for media and communications industries. You will explore the ways in which writing for media and communication is evolving in line with technological and social change.

You will develop skills and strategies for writing in the style and tone used across media and communication roles, including principles of grammar, punctuation and editing. You will produce documents appropriate for use across print and digital media, applying the professional writing principles of accuracy, style/presentation, content/relevance and timeliness.

Program Learning Outcomes

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  1. Critically analyse and apply a diverse and industry relevant body of knowledge and skills to the field of media and communications in a global context
  2. Communicate using diverse formats and strategies to audiences within and external to your discipline
  3. Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice 


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. identify which types of events and issues attract media interest and explain how this influences the style, tone and content of basic documents used in the media and communication industries
  2. Identify and analyse different rhetorical styles and content forms used for different purposes in basic documents used in the media and communication industries
  3. apply the professional writing principles of accuracy, style/presentation, content/relevance and timeliness
  4. adapt your writing to a range of audiences and needs
  5. produce basic documents used in media and communication industries


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities.

You will put the theory of media writing into practice in classes and there will be an emphasis on developing editing and writing with other students.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning.
