Course Description
In this course you will acquire and develop knowledge of the role of journalism in democratic societies. You will be introduced to practical journalistic activities, news gathering, reporting and writing. This course prepares you for more advanced journalism courses by exploring journalism’s basic functions, and best professional practices, and how they converge in the modern newsroom.

In this course you will develop and be assessed on the following program learning outcomes:
- Critically analyse and apply a diverse and industry relevant body of knowledge and skills to the field of media and communications in a global context
- Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse contexts within the professional communication field
- Communicate using diverse formats and strategies to audiences within and external to your discipline
- Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice
- Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making in your practice or future study.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain the role of journalism and journalists in democratic societies
- Describe how a newsroom operates and how news is produced
- Identify news values and sources of news
- Research and write basic news stories

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities.
