Course Description

Engineers and scientists are challenged with managing increased volume and poor quality of stormwater due to rapid urbanization. This course covers the two major aspects related to stormwater management in urban areas: mitigating flood risk through reducing peak stormwater flows and designing drainage networks to remove flows; and characterizing and improving stormwater quality by estimating contaminant loads, addressing contaminant transport issues and designing stormwater improvement infrastructure such as retarding basins, online traps and water sensitive urban design features.

You will be undertaking project based assignments that integrate theoretical and practical knowledge related to management of urban stormwater quantity and quality.

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Identify and examine the principles underlying the design of stormwater drainage systems.
  2. Analyze and design aspects of the major components of stormwater systems, focusing mainly on urban drainage and detention basin design  
  3. Explain the operation and estimation of the impact of water quality improvement in infrastructure.
  4. Review and apply modeling packages commonly used in practice by design engineers.
  5. Integrate knowledge of Urban Drainage Systems, Drainage Basin design and Water Quality improvements with Practice concepts
  6. Recognise from a whole-of-project management perspective the phases involved in assessing, designing, constructing and maintaining stormwater infrastructure systems.


Overview of Learning Activities

This course involves lectures and tutorials along with computer lab classes on simulation modelling. The prescribed text is intended to support the lectures and reading material. This course material and the theory learnt during lectures and tutorials will assist you master the subject matter of drainage engineering skills. Within the modules there are review exercises – working through these will enable you to judge your understanding of key conceptsReview exercises will also foster group discussion and communication skills relevant to professional engineering practices.

Online lecture and reading material uploaded onto the Canvas LMS are designed to support your learning. However, to be effective you need to actively use these resources.

Total study hours: Total of 48 hours guided teaching by teacher in lecture and tutorial classes. 8 hours of self-directed learning per week is recommended.
