Year 1 and 2 of  Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure) or equivalent.


Course Description

This course is designed to broaden your design knowledge acquired in the second year and also to introduce you to “think green” at an early stage of your career. Lectures will introduce structural timber design and a project will introduce the concepts of civil infrastructure design with a sustainability focus. In the project you will learn to deal with different stages of the life cycle, namely, planning, implementation (engineering and construction), and operation (in-service) phases.

On completion of this course you should be able to:

1. To design a building using timber as a structural material, including theory and code of practice.

2. To apply principles and practice of sustainability concepts in a given civil engineering infrastructure development project and to recognize civil engineering design as a multi-disciplinary practice

3. Design foundation for residential building according to design code.

4. To validate your creative ideas and design decisions benchmarked against planning requirements, sustainability measures and structural adequacy and “whole of life” performance.

5. To research and adopt the best practices in the building industry in achieving sustainable building stock


Overview of Learning Activities

This course adopts a project-based learning approach. A modular blended learning model comprising lectorial/tutorials/workshop sessions coupled with you undertaking a comprehensive civil infrastructure design project - Sustainable Home Design.

You are expected to be informed by your own research, visiting display homes by reputed builders and discuss the project with family and friends.

Design workshops are meant to share information and active participation of all students in so that peer-learning enhances the design skill development.
