Course Description

Medical Informatics and Laboratory Management aims to introduce you to a number of the management aspects of laboratory medicine and medical research including change management, laboratory information systems, intellectual property, creative thinking, economics of the healthcare system and pathology services, automation, point of care testing, quality systems, accreditation of laboratory services and legal issues affecting the practice of medical scientists in laboratory medicine. The medical informatics component of the course includes principles and practice of digitising and manipulating information, in particular for the purposes of image analysis and interpretation. The course examines the use of information systems in the laboratory and how knowledge/expert systems can assist in decision making processes. The role of the Internet in healthcare management is covered.

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Discuss and evaluate information in the discipline of medical informatics and laboratory management including LIS, Expert systems, Automation, POCT, Accreditation, Leadership & Management, Business Case, Quality systems, Telemedicine and E-health).
  2. Discuss the application of medical informatics in a laboratory environment, and critically analyse for and against the impact of such technologies on the future practice of diagnostic pathology and medical research.
  3. Explain and relate the role and function of Medical Scientists in the current and future practice of Laboratory Medicine both nationally and internationally.


Overview of Learning Activities

You are expected to spend 4 hours every week on the Online Canvas Learning Management System to go through the pre-recorded videos and to attend the Optional Canvas Collaborate Ultra tutorial sessions.

You are also expected to study and prepare for the tests, essays and final examination.

Altogether you are expected to spend 120 hours studying in this course.

Learning resources in this course include recommended text books, lecture notes (PowerPoint presentations), handouts or references on selected topics. The Learning Management System provides opportunities for you to independently access much of this material and use an asynchronous conference.
