Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

None

Course Description

This course will provide a practice based learning context where you will explore spatial sound composition and diffusion practices, using the SIAL Sound Diffusion System. For performances, the system currently consists of 22 loudspeakers, with a smaller array installed in the Sound Studios for course activities, experiments and workshops.

On completing this course, you will have a broad understanding of sound diffusion practices and the technical requirements for composing a sound based work for diffusion using a multichannel system.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. develop practical skills and knowledge for production and presentations using spatial sound diffusion in a range of media,
  2. be able to prepare electroacoustic composition(s) and supporting documentation for public performance,
  3. be able to analyse, reflect and communicate concepts related to spatial sound composition and diffusion using digital media, in ‘sound-only’ and audio/visual contexts
  4. develop an understanding of, and practical skills for creating spatial sound diffusions that will enhance the listener experience in performance, installations and non-linear media formats such as games.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectures, workshops, presentations, field recordings, site visits and sound diffusion activities. Delivery may be face-to-face, online or a mix of both.

Overview of Learning Resources

There are services and resources available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the RMIT student website.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

 Assessment Tasks

Assessment 1: Annotated bibliography: 15% (CLO 1)

Assessment 2: Spatial Sound design exercises: 20% (CLO 2)

Assessment 3: Performance practice: 25% (CLO 3)

Assessment 4: Spatial sound documentation: 40% (CLO 4)

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or Equitable Learning Services if you would like to find out more.

Your course assessment conforms to RMIT assessment principles, regulations, policies, procedures and instructions.
