Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

AERO2255 Management of Aerospace Design and Research

Course Description

This course provides an opportunity to tackle a complex, indeterminate aerospace system design task, with the aim of generating credible, conceptual design solutions. The course is primarily project-based, where you will be working in design teams. A design brief for an aerospace system such as a fixed-wing aircraft, rotorcraft, spacecraft or unmanned aircraft system is provided. The design brief is used to generate a set of requirements. You will then generate, evaluate and select suitable design concepts to meet these requirements.

Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level.
This applies to students who commence enrolment in a bachelor honours program from 1 January 2016 onwards. See the WAM information web page for more information.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following program learning outcomes for students who commenced their program prior to 2023:

  • Discernment of knowledge development and research directions within the engineering discipline
  • Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline
  • Application of established engineering methods to complex engineering problem solving
  • Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources
  • Application of systematic engineering synthesis and design processes
  • Application of systematic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects
  • Creative, innovative and pro-active demeanour
  • Professional use and management of information
  • Effective team membership and team leadership

This course contributes to the following program learning outcomes for students who commenced their program in 2023:

  • PLO3: Apply engineering research principles, methods and contemporary technologies and practices to plan and execute projects taking into account ethical, environmental and global impacts.
  • PLO4: Apply systematic problem solving, design methods and information and project management to propose and implement creative and sustainable solutions with intellectual independence and cultural sensitivity.
  • PLO7: Collaborate and contribute as an effective team member in diverse, multi-level, multi-disciplinary teams, with commitment to First Nations peoples and globally inclusive perspectives and participation.

Upon successful completion of the course, you should be able to:

  1. Translate a design brief for a complex, indeterminate aerospace system into a set of well-defined engineering requirement;
  2. Generate, using creative techniques, credible design concepts for aerospace systems based on a set of engineering requirements;
  3. Evaluate design concepts for aerospace systems using analysis, experiment or simulation methods;
  4. Determine which design concepts for an aerospace system best meet a set of engineering requirements;
  5. Demonstrate effective teamworking and project management skills.

Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities can include pre-recorded lectures, project-based individual and team work and facilitated group meetings.
