Course Description

This course develops understanding of the standard medical approach to diagnosis of conditions that commonly present to primary-contact health care practitioners. In addition indicators of conditions that require referral are covered.
This course also provides support for the student’s developing patient care responsibilities in the student teaching clinics. Specifically the course, in conjunction with MEDS2075 covers the age related range of clinical conditions encountered in osteopathic practice. The course seeks to develop an understanding and appreciation of the pregnant, paediatric, adolescent and elderly patient in society and clinical practice.
The growth, development and ageing processes of the human body, the appropriate history taking processes for various stages of the lifecycle, and the age dependant response of the patient to intervention are covered.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Capability Level 4: At this level of capability application, integration and synthesis of all relevant factors enable unfamiliar situations to be researched and dealt with in an appropriate manner. The clinical applications incorporate all previous approaches to arrive at an appropriate patient care and management plan and the capacity to implement it or oversee it’s implementation.

To be able to diagnose common conditions that affect patients at different stages of life from a medical perspective and to recognise when there is a need for referral
