Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
It will be assumed that students have basic knowledge about multimedia devices; the process of digitization (ADC, DAC, sampling, quantisation, aliasing ..); sound and audio systems; light and photography; digital video; video capturing; operation of digital cameras and video cameras; data compression; digital image input/output to/from PC, basic PC operation; basic digital image manipulation;
Multimedia Engineering 2 is a continuation of Multimedia Engineering 1 and has a strong focus on the engineering/technical issues associated with content development and delivery.
Course Description
This course will familiarise students with the technologies used in multimedia development and delivery. For students who target careers in multimedia design and development, the knowledge gained in this course will help them to conduct efficient design and development in the future. For students who aim careers in multimedia engineering, this introductory course will lay the foundation for their further study on the engineering track.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course is aimed to provide students with a good understanding about various aspects of multimedia engineering. The students who completed this course will be able to: describe the multimedia standards and key technologies; Explain the principles of Data Compression (audio, still image and video); Understand the issues related to multimedia storage and communications; Identify the issues in multimedia delivery ; Select appropriate formats for particular multimedia design and development; create multimedia content in efficient formats with advanced tools;
As part of this course, student will also develop:
- Teamwork and leadership skills through project work that utilises the technical capabilities as developed in this course.
- Communication skills through report writing and group presentation of the project work.
- Life-long skills for information management by learning to make efficient use of the wide variety of on-line resources to find answers to specific and general technical questions
- Skills in problem solving and decision making
This course is aimed to provide students with a good understanding about multimedia content development. It addresses technical issues related to audio production, video production, data compression such as MPEG, and multimedia delivery. Students will have in depth understanding on multimedia from engineering point of view. The course lays a solid foundation for students who want to pursue career in multimedia design, multimedia production or multimedia engineering.
Upon completing this course students should be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge of Multimedia Engineering
Identify Multimedia standards and key technologies
Demonstrate knowledge of the fundamentals of Data Compression (audio, still image and video).
Describe how to create Multimedia content
Create multi-media products, using a range of tools
Understand the range of multi-media products, their costs and complexity and methods for determining appropriate application
Design usable multi-media products to meet the needs of a design brief
Demonstrate an understanding of trends in the uses of multimedia products in the workplace
