Course Description
This course will examine a number of approaches to leadership and management in organisations, encouraging you to critically evaluate the theories and models presented. You will reflect on your own competencies with a view to developing your leadership and management skills. The course is designed to enable you to apply your academic learning to a contemporary workplace situation. The integration of work-based learning and academic learning, commonly referred to as Work Integrated Learning (WIL), will enable you to solve authentic business problems or address real issues faced in organisations.
RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience. This course has been designed as a ’Work Integrated Learning’ (WIL) course in which aspects of your academic learning will be applied in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and community is integral to your experience.

- Understand the impact of your personal development through the acquisition of self-improvement and self-assessment.
Overview of Learning Activities
A variety of individual and group activities will be used to help you achieve the learning outcomes specified above. These may include:
- Lectures introducing concepts, models and frameworks.
- Experiential exercises to test ideas and practice and evaluate your level of skills and knowledge.
- Guided reading.
- Discussion which provides a forum to exchange ideas and understanding with other students, and to debate issues relating to various theories, models and frameworks. The discussion and debate will also assist you in the critical evaluation of concepts presented in the course.
- Self-assessments and feedback opportunities are presented at various points during the semester to help you develop greater self-awareness and understanding, a necessary step in self-development.
- Group research and presentation enables you to apply group management skills and concepts while critically evaluating ideas in a group setting.
This course will provide you and your class with the opportunity to receive industry feedback on your learning activities or assessment tasks.
Overview of Learning Resources
In addition to a textbook, you will have access to online course materials via the student MyRMIT portal and additional information from the RMIT Library. You will be required to read widely from references provided and undertake your own research via the library data bases.
Overview of Assessment
Assessment in this course is concerned with your ability to synthesise and present knowledge on the meaning and competencies of leading and managing, to increase self knowledge and to develop strategies to improve your own leadership competencies. This will occur through written work and/or oral presentation.
