Capabilities in this course build on those formerly developed in the following courses:

  • OMGT1122 Investment Evaluation
  • OMGT1138 Property Development

Students that have not successfully completed the above courses will find completing this course extremely difficult. Therefore, it is a requirement that students should have successfully completed the above prerequisites before being granted a place on the course.



Course Description

This course develops a student’s ability to undertake complex feasibility studies. Students will learn these skills and techniques through performing various feasibility studies of differering size and complexity. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. apply self discipline and independent thought to produce a practical, professional outcome
  2. obtain and synthesise information from a wide range of sources to achieve an informed outcome
  3. work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and contribute to professional outcomes
  4. assess and manage risk in a pro-active manner


By the end of this course you will be able to: 

  1. measurethe impact of competing alternatives
  2. demonstrate decision making skills based on the interpretation of broad ranging, and potentially conflicting, information
  3. evaluate the risks facing a proposal and advance strategies to avoid or mitigate the potential risks
  4. present material that results in practical and appropriate professional responses 


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities will take various forms:

  1. lectures presenting concepts and techniques for use in assessment, tests and end of year examination. 
  2. tutorial sessions to review and enhance understanding of the information presented in lectures
  3. group activities to apply the concepts taught
  4. guest speakers that will present ’real-world" case studies and business experiences that will support concepts taught.


Overview of Learning Resources

Resources used in this course will be very broad reflecting the need for the student to understand, research and synthesise a broad range of information.  The problems assigned are varied and on occasions there may not be one correct answer.

Much of the information that feeds into your development analysis and feasibility studies will be available from publicly available sources such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Real Estate Agency research papers and other websites.  Other information will be available from the Library such as Construction Cost Guides, reference books etc. 

An inquiring mind that is willing to investigate many information sources to solve the various problems set.

You will need to take responsibility for your own learning within this course.


Overview of Assessment

Completion of tasks and assessments will occur on an individual and group basis. 

Assessment in this course occurs across the semester to provide students with the opportunity to provide and receive feedback as the course progresses.

Completion of a variety of tasks will be required to demonstrate you have understood the concepts behind the skills and techniques presented but also to provide practice in communicating your knowledge in various forums.  These communication exercises may include written and oral reports of your findings.

To emphasise the need for team work and multi-disciplinary co-operation, assessment will also involve working in various team settings.

You may also have the opportunity to give and receive critical feedback from your peers as part of the overall assessment.
