Course Description

This course aims to provide participants the student with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become effective preceptors in clinical area. It will also provide an opportunity for those already involved in preceptoring or clinical supervision to gain insight into their performance and improve their skills. Clinical Preceptorship is comprised of four modules with optional assessment. Participants who complete all four modules and who successfully complete the assessment within one semester will be eligible to apply for an academic transcript, RMIT. This 39-hour course (equivalent to 12 credit points) is designed for Division 1 and 3 nurses and endorsed midwives

The dimensions of capability developed in the course are:

  1. Ability to apply advanced skills in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in a variety of clinical care settings and contexts
  2. Analysis, synthesis and integration of knowledge and application to practice
  3. Advanced knowledge in specialized area
  4. Facilitates the empowerment of others including diverse groups, through effective and therapeutic communication


  • understand the role of the preceptor in nursing practice
  • explore personal experiences of clinical preceptoring
  • understand the major issues involved in preceptoring
  • analyse a variety of strategies for differing teaching situations
  • evaluate the principles of adult teaching and learning
  • critically appraise issues of evaluation and assessment
  • develop advanced communication skills
  • prepare, deliver and evaluate a clinical teaching session
  • prepare a teaching learning package for the clinical area
