This course is the capstone course for the M Tech (Enterprise Architecture). The objectives of this course are to enable you to use the knowledge and capabilities you have acquired relating to Enterprise Architecture to understand, analyse, solve and communicate the solution of a realistic Enterprise Architecture problem. In addition, you will learn about a variety of successful and less successful real-life Enterprise Architecture projects and about the factors that influence the success or failure of such projects.
You will deepen your knowledge about all aspects of Enterprise Architectures; learn what the implications of different Enterprise Architecture choices are and criteria for making such choices. In addition, you will develop additional capabilities for communicating and explaining your choices and decisions relating to Enterprise Architectures.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
[Enabling knowledge and skills] Enterprise architecture principles and purpose; critical success factors for enterprise architecture development, adoption, and governance; key enterprise architecture approaches, standards, and frameworks and the overall enterprise architecture lifecycle key roles and responsibilities associated with enterprise architectures management aspects and factors associated with enterprise architectures best practice processes of development of enterprise architecture, including key success factors; analysis of alternative models for enterprise architectures frameworks and models for enterprise architecture analysis components of good Enterprise Architecture processes and the implications of inadequate implementation; different industry examples of enterprise architectures best practices contents of enterprise architectures; different apaches for communicating and documenting enterprise architectures across a range of organizational aspects, industry differences, and cultural environments; appropriate interaction with stakeholders when developing and communicating Enterprise Architectures; team formulation, dynamics and diagnostics, including awareness of implications of cultural issues; key roles and leadership areas for enterprise architecture organizational politics, key influencing factors related to enterprise architectures and corporate governance key people characteristics and development and career paths related to enterprise architectures.
[Critical analysis] Evaluate alternative enterprise architecture approaches, identify critical success factors for common and best practice enterprise architect approaches, and discriminate key factors in successful and unsuccessful enterprise architectures.
[Problem solving] Develop appropriate enterprise architecture governance and management structures, overall enterprise architectures and specific aspects of enterprise architectures for different organizational components and responsibilities and across all phases of enterprise architecture lifecycle, and appropriate management approaches and organization structures for best practice enterprise architecture development and successful implementation.
[Responsibility] Define appropriate enterprise architecture approaches and processes for different organizations; identify key factors in successful and unsuccessful enterprise architectures and recommend alternative approaches.
[Leadership] Plan, allocate, coordinate and manage activities required for completion of course assessment; develop appropriate organization chart and associated responsibility statements related to enterprise architecture and associated governance; identify and plan appropriate leadership activities related to enterprise architectures and associated governance.
[Communication] Produce suitable written documentation and models, and produce and deliver presentation material for formal and informal oral presentations relating to enterprise architectures, for all appropriate audiences; develop communications plans for enterprise architectures.
[Teamwork] Recognise stakeholders in an organization environment when developing and communicating enterprise architectures, and apply skills to develop appropriate interaction strategy; form, manage, and successfully produce outcomes from diverse teams.
Overview of Learning Activities
• A semester-long group project dealing with all aspects of developing an enterprise architecture
• Face-to-face lectures, where the lecturer presents some of the topics in the course material
• Analysis of case studies, presented by industry experts, where students explore team dynamics, diagnostics, and management
• Seminar-style discussions, where students present additional topics in the course material, and apply their knowledge of earlier topics to recognize underlying principles and potential applications of new topics
• Group presentations to classmates, teaching staff, and industry people of outcomes from assessment activities
• Guest lectures from industry experts on key topics
Overview of Learning Resources
This is a new discipline so there is no single textbook that covers all the material for this course. However, a reading list of relevant books will be provided. You are also expected to read other material including documents, articles, and reference publications that will either be provided during the lecture, seminars, tutorials, or through references during learning activities or through other course communication mechanisms. Lecture notes will be available from the RMIT Bookshop and/or the course Web site.
Overview of Assessment
Participation in case study analysis sessions within groups and with key input and guidance from lecturers and industry experts
Assignments in which students will identify and address the needs of potential stakeholders related to Enterprise Architecture
Group presentations to classmates and teaching staff of outcomes from assessment activities
A semester-long group project dealing with all aspects of developing an enterprise architecture
