Course Description

Airports and airlines typically operate in competition. This course introduces you to a range of issues and trends relevant to development of aviation commercial revenue in practice.

You will learn what it takes to contribute to the successful operation of a commercial airport, gaining broad skills in developing or participating in the development of strategies for airport or airline revenue and finance development.

  1. Evaluate in broad terms the importance of airport landside operations in revenue generation;
  2. Understand global trends in airport design and their relationship to revenue generation;
  3. Describe and apply to the design of airport retail space, principles of retailing and the special case of retailing in airports;
  4. Analyse issues of airport commercialisation
  5. Participate in planning and development of business in the airport environment.
  6. Analyse low-cost airline business models
  7. Evaluate airline ownership and its commercialisation

Description:  A topic in Aviation Commercialisation would be given. Student must summarise key issues in that topic in their own words and critically comment in the theoretical aspects of the topic.

Assessment item:  Assignment 2 (group)
Weighting of final grade:  30%

Description:  Group analytic report on a topic related to airport planning and management.

Assessment item:  Assignment 3 (group oral presentation)
Weighting of final grade:  10%

Description:  This presentation aims to offer an opportunity for students to practice speaking skill in airport planning and management.

Assessment item:  Final exam
Weighting of final grade:  35%

Description:  2-hour final written examination will consist of questions related to this subject.  It will reflect material in the prescribed readings, and in the work done for class discussions and assignments.
