Course Description

Digital Textile Design & Communication is an introductory course in the use of Adobe Photoshop for Textile Design practice. 

In DTD&C you will use PC computers, or your personal laptop to design a series of textile design outcomes using Adobe Photoshop.  You will research suitable themes, colour palettes and design styles using analogue and digital research methods.  Based on your research you will design surface repeats, create storyboards and product simulations appropriate to your project direction.  All outcomes will reflect the broad nature of the current textile design industry.  You will be creating artwork for both traditional screen printing and digital fabric printing. 

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will focus on the following program capabilities

  • Communicate and present design concepts using a range of formats and strategies in a clear and coherent manner to diverse audiences.
  • Examine, evaluate and apply technologies associated with textile design and manufacturing in both local and global contexts.

At the conclusion of this course you will be able to

  • Analyse collected research/reference to create appropriate digital textile design outcomes in response to the project brief/s given.
  • Use discipline specific knowledge to create design outcomes in Adobe photoshop.
  • Be able to describe and justify the methods and technical processes used in project work.

Key concepts and their application will be explained and illustrated in lectures, class based activities or online notes/tutorials.  There will be opportunities to discuss the brief and requirements during individual and group tutorials.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.  This course has been developed in reference to the BATD assessment guide available through BP121 Mystudies – Canvas.   Please refer to the guide in order to familiarise yourself with program assessment methods. At the beginning of each project you will receive a copy of the: brief, teaching schedule and assessment rubric. The rubric should be consulted regularly, as it allows you to self assess and manage your progress. It will be used by your course lecturer/s to assess your project work upon completion.     Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.   If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods.
