Course Description

In this course you will be introduced to digital media cultures and how these play out in Asian contexts. The theoretical approaches are drawn from a technosocial approach to digital culture, which may include convergence, participatory media, networks, co-presence, and communities. You will explore relationships between social media and mainstream mass media, and the emergent socialities and visualities associated with internet practices in Asia.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

If you are enrolled in this course as a contextual studies course you will develop the following program learning outcome:

  • Identify, evaluate and critically analyse cultural, historical and theoretical practices which contextualise your professional practice and further study.


For students enrolled in the Bachelor of Communication - Professional Communication (BP222SIM), you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on professional communication in both local and international contexts. 


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Interpret relevant theoretical knowledge pertaining to the digital culture in Asia and its practices.
  • Critique various contemporary trends and issues in Asian digital media.
  • Analyse the influence of digital media on Asian cultural contexts.
  • Evaluate the social and cultural impact of digital media and emergent technologies on Asian contexts and subcultures.
