The student must have a recognised appropriate Bachelor of Science degree.
Course Description
This course contains a selection of advanced lecture topics that are designed to extend the theory and/or techniques gained from undergraduate courses and hence assist students to learn the advanced skills and techniques required to prosecute applied research. The lecture program will extend the student’s theoretical and research skills base, while the assessment, by assignment or examination, is designed to further develop the student’s ability to work independently and prepare written reports.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
On completion of this unit, the student should:
1. have an enhanced understanding of six advanced theory, technical and/or practical topics;
2. be able to apply these in the research environment.
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning activities will include lectures, tutorials and workshops. These will be delivered by a number of different staff throughout the semester, and therefore a variety of techniques will be encountered, including lectures, discussions, problem-solving sessions, demonstrations, CD-ROM, and overhead and slide presentations. Students’ contributions to these sessions will include discussion, critical appraisal and problem solving.
Overview of Learning Resources
Students may be provided with and/or directed to, suitable learning resources by the individual topic lecturers. There are no prescribed texts for this course. Some theory topic materials will be available on the RMIT web via the Distributed Learning System (DLS). Other Program and course information is available on the Discipline LAN at: S:\hons.
Overview of Assessment
Honours Theory comprises a selection of about twenty topics, you may attend as many topics as you wish. However, you may attempt assessment in a maximum of seven topics. Of these seven assessments, the marks for the best six will be averaged and count toward your final grade. Each assessment will contribute equally towards your final mark for this course. Assessment for each topic is by one hour examination OR assignment.
