Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

To successfully complete this course, you should have the ability to apply your engineering skills and knowledge in the project design and development. You are expected to have completed EEET2257 Engineering Design 2 or equivalent courses.

Course Description

This is the first semester of your two-semester Professional Engineering Project experience at the School of Engineering. Next semester you will continue to complete your Professional Engineering Project work. This semester you will work in a team to develop an Electrical/Electronic/Communication Engineering product idea. It is expected that by the end of this semester your team will have made significant progress in terms of designing and building your team's product. At the end of next semester your team will demonstrate your product at the School of Engineering Trade Fair, which is usually attended and judged by many industry representatives. For the duration of the Professional Engineering Project your team will be assigned an academic staff member, who will act as your team’s mentor.

The course objectives are to:
• Introduce you to engineering projects and to engineering research projects
• Provide you with learning outcomes related to completion of a team project activity

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours):

  • Comprehensive, theory based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the engineering discipline.
  • Discernment of knowledge development and research directions within the engineering discipline.
  • Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline.
  • Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the specific discipline.
  • Application of established engineering methods to complex engineering problem solving.
  • Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources.
  • Application of systematic engineering synthesis and design processes.
  • Application of systematic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects.
  • Ethical conduct and professional accountability.
  • Effective oral and written communication in professional and lay domains.
  • Creative, innovative and pro-active demeanour.
  • Professional use and management of information.
  • Orderly management of self, and professional conduct.
  • Effective team membership and team leadership.

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Apply critical and creative thinking in the design of engineering projects. Apply knowledge of the ‘real world’ situations that a professional engineer can encounter.
  2. Plan and manage your time effectively as an individual and as a team. Design and develop a functional product prototype while working in a team. Manage any disputes and conflicts within and outside of your team.
  3. Consider the business context and commercial positioning of designed prototype device or system.
  4. Utilise fundamental knowledge and skills in engineering and apply it effectively to a project.
  5. Reflect on your own and your peers’ technical and non-technical learning.
  6. Present your work to your peers, academics, general and industry community.

Overview of Learning Activities

This course will engage you in team project activities and face-to-face classes.

Under the guidance of an academic mentor your team will work towards designing and developing an Engineering product. In essence you will be involved in a problem-based learning activity that will enable you to learn how to work effectively both individually and as a member of a team in order to successfully design and build a product.

It is expected that your team will meet with your mentor regularly. This will provide your team with the appropriate guidance and critique to help you in your project work.
The face-to-face weekly classes will be presented by RMIT academics and external guest lecturers. The knowledge from the face-to-face classes will enable you to further enhance your skills in engineering design.

Overview of Learning Resources

The lecture schedule and lecture materials together along with instructions on the project part of the course will be accessible to you through RMIT's online systems. In the lecture series you will be presented with non-technical topics, covering specialised knowledge and tools that a professional engineer must be equipped with in order to be successful in today’s competitive engineering marketplace.
