Course Description
This course aims to develop in the students the skills of critical reading and writing and communication at an advanced professional level, compatible with publication in refereed journals. The students will read extensively in a selected discipline area and write an extensive critical review of the literature, including those sources not easily accessed.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
At the end of the course, the student should be able to: search the literature thoroughly, read critically, synthesise a critical review, link this to the research project and communicate this effectively orally and in writing to a critical audience.
Overview of Learning Activities
The student will receive information on scientific writing during the Honours research methods course (lectures and tutorials) and in research group activities simultaneously and be guided closely in searching the literature, reading critically and synthesising the review and communication by the research supervisor during this course and the research project.
Overview of Learning Resources
Current literature, including critical reviews of other topics, will be used through the Library. The DLS will have documents on scientific writing from the Honours research methods course. Specific references on scientific writing will be available in the Library and in external internet references.
Overview of Assessment
Students will be assessed by presenting a seminar and writing a literature review.
