Course Description

This course is designed to provide an overview of concepts of health enhancement, lifestyle management and wellness and their place in the contemporary health system. You will learn and experience personal interventions that enhance and complement health in areas such as stress management, exercise, nutrition, social well-being, spirituality, education and environment. The course has relevance for all consumers of healthcare and people interested in enhancing their health, as well as for future healthcare professionals. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course is offered as a University Student Elective to undergraduate students from various disciplines.


On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • CLO 1. Describe the roles that stress, exercise, nutrition, society, spirituality, education and the environment play in contributing to general health and wellness.
  • CLO 2. Reflect on current lifestyle activities, develop strategies to modify lifestyle areas that increase risk of disease or illness and introduce activities to improve health, wellness and quality of life.
  • CLO 3. Utilise mind-body approaches to manage stress, improve physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and increase connectedness, performance, memory and concentration.
  • CLO 4. Elaborate and apply techniques such as journaling, mentoring, and goal-setting (“SMARTER”: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound, Enjoyable, Rewarding) to achieve specific lifestyle goals.


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities for this course provide a varied range of on-line tasks related to health, wellness, and communication. Key wellness concepts and their application will be explained in the Learning Package and reading materials. There will be discussion of ideas, exploration of various aspects of health and wellness, and the opportunity to work with a mentor to help you identify and achieve your personal wellness-related goals.

The assessment in this course is designed to help you gain insight into your personal health and wellness on various levels, and make changes that have the potential to benefit your health in the long term. The assessment is very practical and task-oriented, but it does require you to think, set goals and develop insights about yourself and the social contexts of wellness. It is imperative that students stay up to date with weekly tasks and activities to avoid failure. Feedback is provided via the online marking rubric for each weighted assessment and should be used to guide to adequately complete each assessment to a satisfactory standard.

Teacher Guided Hours: 36 per semester (online)

Learner Directed Hours: 84 per semester


Overview of Learning Resources

This course is provided online through myRMIT Studies. We make use of many of the facilities in the online learning environment, including discussion boards, weekly announcements, personal blogs, email, and links to the RMIT library and various learning resources. Links are also provided to the Learning Package with its weekly topics and activities and to prescribed readings and recommended websites. Students are a valuable resource for each other: your diverse backgrounds and life experiences make for lively discussion and exchange of views.

Pre-wellness program 750-word report on your health and wellness, gaps and priorities based upon your Pre-Wellness Program Personal Wellness Inventory results

Entered into Blackboard between Weeks 4-11 plus  eight Weekly Action Plans completed with your mentor
