You are required to have successfully completed Geospatial Science Major Project A.

Course Description

This course is the second major component of the final year project course, providing an opportunity for you to further develop your knowledge and expertise to a high level in an area of geospatial science, surveying, or cartography of particular interest to you. It builds on the foundations of the major project commenced in the course GEOM2114-Geospatial Science Major Project A. The nature of the project chosen for completion must show a demonstrable component of research. As a research-type project, it will exhibit elements of investigative research (e.g. a literature survey) and include interpretive commentary (i.e. answer a question). Projects generally will be done individually but in some circumstances, where the nature of the project deems it appropriate, there may be more than one student involved in a single project. The course includes presentations to and feedback from industry.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

At the successful completion this course (over both semesters) you will be able to:

  • Identify a suitable project relating to geospatial science, surveying or cartography that is appropriate for their final year project.
  • Define clearly the objectives of that project.
  • State succinctly the proposed outcomes for that project (i.e. the final product).
  • Analyse what needs to be done in order to achieve the project objectives and outcomes.
  • Devise a methodology for systematically and satisfactorily completing the project.
  • Systematically and competently implement the above methodology.
  • Liaise in a professional manner with all relevant parties (which may include industry or industry-like feedback) as appropriate for that project.
  • Produce final project outcomes of a high professional standard.
  • Respond to industry feedback on the project. 

This course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes:

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be assisted to develop a proposal for a project by way of relevant lectures and consultation with academic staff and/or industry.

Each project will have an internal supervisor who will be an academic member of staff. In many instances there will also be an external supervisor (external to RMIT) who has a particular interest in your project area. They may serve as a potential mentor and will provide industry feedback.

The course will also include occasional lectures on matters relating to the satisfactory completion of a major project.

Overview of Learning Resources

Learning resources include books and notes as referred to in class. Course documents and other relevant materials are available online. You will have access to the necessary equipment (surveying, GPS etc) as well as computer hardware and software to undertake your major project

Overview of Assessment

Satisfactory completion of a progress report (or equivalent) in the prerequisite course Geospatial Science Major Project A is required as a foundation for the outcomes in this course.

This course is assessed on following completed works:

Assessment Task 1: A logbook providing documentary evidence of all of your first semester activities.
Weighting 5% (Geospatial Science Major Project A)
This assessment task supports CLOs 1,3,4

Assessment Task 2: A project poster and oral presentation to industry of your project plan.
Weighting 15% (Geospatial Science Major Project A).
This assessment task supports CLOs 2,3,4,6

Assessment Task 3: A final project presentation to summarise your project and its outcomes.
Weighting 10% (Geospatial Science Major Project B)
This assessment task supports CLOs 1,4,5,6

Assessment Task 4: A final written project report, following professional style and conventions.
Weighting 70% (Geospatial Science Major Project B)
This assessment task supports CLOs 1,2,3,4,5,6
