Course Description
This is a capstone course that will provide you with a practical professional approach to advanced least squares, the adjustment of survey networks and the methods to critically analyse these adjustment results for precision and accuracy. There is a strong emphasis on contemporary professional standards and using survey data from traditional as well as new and emerging technologies. It also investigates the realities of adjusting data from different sources, which may be of variable quality and reliability.
Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level. (This applies to students who commence enrolment in a bachelor honours program from 1 January 2016 onwards. See the WAM information web page for more information.)
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for BH116 (Bachelor of Applied Science (Surveying) (Honours):
1.3 Understand specialist bodies of knowledge in surveying and geospatial science
2.1 Apply standard and advanced techniques to solve a range of measurement and data management problems
2.2 Proficiently perform survey computations in two and three dimensions
2.3 Be proficient in the recording, storage, management and reporting of spatial information.
3.1 Design and implement solutions to complex problems in survey measurement and land development.
3.2 Interpret and critically analyse results and make informed judgments on the appropriateness of solutions.
3.3 Apply critical and analytical skills in a scientific and professional manner
6.2 Work with others and contribute in a constructive manner to group and team activities.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain the concepts of 1D, 2D and 3D survey networks;
- Perform practical network designs, analysis and adjustment
- Articulate the theory of network design;
- Perform network adjustments using appropriate software applications;
- Apply statistical concepts and techniques to the adjustment and analysis of survey data.
- Describe the techniques employed in deformation monitoring networks and precise engineering networks
Overview of Learning Activities
This course is conducted as a series of weekly hybrid-concurrent lectorials, on-campus laboratory classes, a field exercise and network adjustment projects.
Overview of Learning Resources
You will be able to access course information and learning materials through the Canvas learning management system. You will be provided with copies of additional materials in class or by Canvas as necessary. Lists of relevant reference texts, resources in the library and freely accessible Internet sites will be provided as necessary.
A library subject guide is available at: http://rmit.libguides.com/geospatial
Overview of Assessment
This course is assessed by a series of network design, adjustment and analysis assignments, and a class test. The assignments have been designed to apply the knowledge gained in lectures and provide practical experience in the understanding and evaluation of survey and photogrammetric networks.
