Course Description
The course provides students the opportunity to undertake individual research on a topic related to cartography, multimedia cartography, geographical visualization, design, or another approved area of study that is related to contemporary geographical information communication. Students undertaking the course will complete a research program and write a minor dissertation, as well as a quality academic article.
The course will be taught as a series of lectures and tutorials, as well as a half-day seminar.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
At the end of this course students should be able to:
• Identify and develop a unique area of study related to cartography and geographical visualization
• Design a research program and successfully complete that program
• Write a minor dissertation; and
• Report on the findings of their research by writing a quality academic paper and making a formal presentation.
The student will be able to use this learning activity to enhance their skill set developed during their undergraduate studies.
At the end of this course the student will be competent at the more sophisticated techniques use in contemporary cartography.
Overview of Learning Activities
1. Current literature will provide insight into the latest research.
2. Hand-ons practical application of the theory using the latest software will enhance the learning experience.
3. Development of a cartographic product to a high standard of both content and presentation will enhance the students understanding of the need for cartographic specifications and standards.
4. Written and oral reporting will enhance the students presentation skills.

This course is assessed by a combination of an Oral Report, an Academic article and a Dissertation.
