Course Description

In this course, you will review how the organisational structure and context impacts on OHS management systems, culture and operational decisions affecting work and workers.

You will critically examine operations of health and safety management systems, their assurance programs for system effectiveness and impact.

You will explore how organisations develop a safety culture to become high reliability organisations.

 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will contribute to the following Program Learning Outcomes:

  • Determine and apply knowledge of complex occupational health and safety theory, principles and best practice to applied projects to contribute to the profession and discipline of occupational health and safety
  • Professionally communicate and justify project scope, design, implementation, strategy and /or outcomes, engaging effectively with diverse stakeholders across a range of industry sectors 

 


On completion of this course you will be able to fulfill the requirements of the following Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):

  1. Analyse health and safety governance obligations and identify the governance systems, culture and operational decisions needed to achieve them
  2. Interpret and apply international and industry standards to occupational health and safety management systems for maximum effectiveness
  3. Develop and communicate organisational health and safety goals to stakeholders
  4. Apply health and safety assurance programs to achieve organisational goals

 


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion,individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment consists of:

Task 1. Safety Culture Maturity Model & Strategy Assignment 35% CLOs 1&3

Task 2. OH&S corporate governance and reporting 35% CLOs1,2,&3

Task 3. Analysis of safety disaster case study 30% CLOs1,2&4

 

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
