Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
The assumed knowledge for this course is that you should have some work experience in a professional area and should enter the course with at least one issue of sustainability that you wish to pursue. You will need to have some experience in line with the program capabilities. You are expected to have a first degree or substantial work experience.
Course Description
The Sustainability Body of Practice 1-4 courses aims to articulate a range of different practices from different disciplines that can be used to navigate progress through a particular problem solving or management cycle.
Sustainability Body of Practice I focuses on sustainability principles and content based on other people’s practice. During the course you will explore a particular area of sustainability negotiated with your supervisor.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for MC240 Master of Sustainable Practice
K1 - A body of knowledge that includes the understanding of recent developments of sustainability in discipline and/or area of professional practice.
K2 - Knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to a field of work and or learning.
S1 - Cognitive skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and to reflect critically on theory and professional practice or scholarship.
S2 - Cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information.
On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Identify sustainability problems
- Define the problem – ‘living with the question’
- Develop a strategy to manage the issue, not necessarily solving it (there may be several options to explore before solutions arise)
Overview of Learning Activities
The learning activities in this course are workshops where you are expected to actively engage in activities around resolving questions and subsequent de-briefing. You will read widely in preparation for workshop participation. You will learn from case studies, analysis, discussion, presentations and writing about sustainability in the workshops.
During the course you will explore a particular area of sustainability negotiated with your supervisor.

Course information and learning materials will be provided through myRMIT or in class. Lists of reference texts, resources in the library and freely accessible Internet sites will be provided.

☒This course has no hurdle requirements.
The course assessment reflects the aim to encourage research on a topic of sustainability thus assessment is heavily weighted towards the production of a Research Report.

Students develop individual project briefs for report submission and progress report mid semester - 15%
