This course extends the experience and capabilities developed in Medical Imaging Practice two towards more complex imaging technologies through a further placement within a clinical radiology practice or department.

Course Description

This course forms the third regular exposure to the healthcare environment for students who will be required to attend a designated clinical radiology practice or department for their clinical placement block. Experience is gained in more complex imaging technologies through participation and observation under the guidance of qualified technologists. Students will gain experience in the functioning of multidisciplinary teams along with the specific roles performed by medical imaging technologists. The skills developed in general radiographic imaging will be maintained through rotation to relevant areas where possible and as time permits. The format of this course is attendance at a designated and accredited radiology department, and on campus activities (including formal lectures and tutorials).


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The main objective of this course is for students to develop an understanding of more complex imaging technologies and the functioning of multidisciplinary healthcare teams. The capabilities addressed include the ability to communicate at an informed and more independent level with patients and healthcare professionals utilising appropriate terminology and applied theory. Students should be capable of involving themselves with the wider healthcare environment and understand the role of the Medical Imaging Technologist in complex imaging procedures.


The main objective of this course is for students to consolidate knowledge and skills in general radiography, theatre/mobile and fluoroscopy and also to develop an understanding of more complex imaging technologies and the functioning of multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Tutorials, lectures, assignments, presentations, clinical practice participation, online threaded discussions, e-journals and a professional development journal are examples of activities that may be used to provide a range of learning experiences and environments for the student.


Overview of Learning Resources

The course has an entry on the DLS and students will be referred to this site at the commencement of semester. This resource provides a range of materials aimed at supporting learning activities throughout the semester and students are encouraged to actively use this site and the material it contains. Course information will be placed on DLS. Students are also expected to commence self-directed learning to reinforce learning.
