Course Description

This course introduces the student to basic management techniques applicable to engineering including reports, both written and verbal, organisational management, teamwork, leadership, ethics, managing projects, sustainability and environmental impacts.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcome (PLOs):

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
1. Retrieve information via problem identification, validation and data collection and analysis then deliver reports either written or verbal,
2. Demonstrate organisational management roles/functions, characteristics and responsibilities,
3. Problem solving and decision making in Engineering management
4. Demonstrate basic skills in the understanding of: 

  •  Human resource management and training
  •  Teamwork, leadership and discipline,
  •   Staff selection, personnel procedures and training
  •   Introduction to project management
  •   Fundamentals of ethics and environmental impacts

  • attending scheduled lectures and tutorials,
  • participating in class discussions/activities
  • completing group projects/oral presentations and individual exercises in a simulated workplace environment
  • researching and using online/internet resources related to engineering management

Learning resources will consist of recommended references and class notes which may be accessed through "myRMIT".
The set of references is deliberately broad, including books, journal publications, government reports, industry standards and handbooks, and web-based resources.
