Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Assumed Knowledge
This is an introductory course. A general knowledge of the Internet, Internet Protocol and general networking concepts would be beneficial.
Course Description
The course provides you with a detailed understanding of enterprise and cloud networks, their design, operation and security. The course introduces software defined networking using examples and hands-on activities with software defined network enabled switches and simulators. Network design and security in enterprise and cloud networks are a focus of this course.
Virtualisation is introduced so that students learn how hardware is being used on demand for different software, application and networking solutions. Discussion and workshop activities are included on how future networks are being reshaped by the use of virtualisation and software defined networking. The focus on enterprise and cloud networks reflects the substantial changes occurring within the industry and provides participants with important knowledge on key activities encountered within the industry.
This course includes a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience. WIL activities include simulations and projects using industry technology, equipment and processes.
Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level. (This applies to students who commence enrolment in a bachelor honours program from 1 January 2016 onwards. See the WAM information web page for more information.

- Describe the use of virtualization, security and software defined networking within enterprise and cloud networks.
- Configure virtualization, security and software defined networking within a laboratory context.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.
Lecturer directed workshops will include discussion and activities related to learning about enterprise and cloud networks including virtualization, security and software defined networking and other systems and equipment in campus networks and data centres. Laboratory sessions will involve learning and extensive configuration and interaction with network devices and other equipment which is part of the network infrastructure used in enterprise and cloud networks.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, andthrough links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through myRMIT Studies Course. The course learning resources include material that will be utilised in workshops and laboratories. You will be able to access the learning material online and to prepare for sessions by reading the learning material and by carrying out research using the RMIT library resources.
There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.
