Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Students taking this course will have completed Advanced Transfusion and Transplantation Science 1 and 2.
They should have the following capabilities on commencing this course:
An in depth understanding of blood transfusion practice in a hospital environment;
A good understanding of techniques and procedures associated with the collection, processing, storage/transportation and transplantation of solid organs, and
A good understanding of immune function, its laboratory based investigation and a range of clinical conditions associated with immune deficiency, autoimmunity and hypersensitivity
Course Description
This course will provide students with an in depth understanding of the collection, processing storage and quality assurance of cellular and plasma products. Students will be introduced to the regulatory requirements associated with the preparation and use of these products. Recent developments in the preparation and use of artificial blood products, cell therapies including stem cell transplantation and immunotherapy and the management of blood and transplantation services, including regulatory requirements will be covered.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
At the conclusion of this course students will be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of current blood transfusion and transplantation practices and be capable of articulating future developments in each of these areas.
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning activities will include tutorials, online conferences/discussion groups and discussions with practitioners working in the field of transfusion and transplantation science.
Overview of Learning Resources
The course includes a program of tutorials, industry visits, seminars and guided self study activities that address each of the learning outcomes in the course. Extensive use will be made of the electronic databases to which the RMIT library subscribes to access recent advances in the topics to be covered in this course
Overview of Assessment
Assessment in this course will be based on the submission of two assignments on topics related to the course, the presentation of a seminar to Advanced Transfusion and Transplantation Science 1 students and contributions to an online conference conducted throughout the semester.
