Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
You must be enrolled in MC088 or MC162 to undertake this course. No pre-requisite courses required, however, MBA program entry criteria & capabilities are required.
Course Description
This is the foundation course of the MBA program. Its purpose is to provide you with an insight into the frameworks and issues that underpin the business and social environment. It covers a broad range of issues from organisational behaviour, economic systems, organisational design, legal dimensions of management and organisation, globalisation and its impacts to larger questions of ethics and society.
This course seeks to develop your awareness of the interrelationships between the organisational resources available, the possible systems and structural designs, the place of organisational strategy and the impacts of global and local environmental forces on organisations.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
You will:
- Develop an understanding of the business principles operating within the modern organisations within domestic and international settings
- Recognise the basis for capitalist and mixed-economic systems, its influence on Government public policy and the business regulatory environment
- Understand the role of financial markets and the connections and impacts of domestic and global economic forces
- Identify key Australian legislation and statutory bodies and their impacts on managerial and organisational practice
- Identify the business implication of Australia’s commitment to international conventions and treaties
- Consider and analyse the nature and impacts of technology and the knowledge economy on business operations within a global context
- Consider the impacts of international trends in trade agreements, global outsourcing and supply chain management, on the operations of the modern organisation
- Interpret the social, economic and ethical impacts of multinational and transnational organisations with reference to sustainable business practice
- Examine international and domestic business practices with regard to managing risk in a complex business environment
- Develop an understanding of organisational structural designs and the role of strategy in developing effective organisations
- Develop managerial capabilities in dealing with business decisions and differing international business practices in a challenging global context
Overview of Learning Activities
You will participate through a variety of different activities including class discussion and case studies.
Of critical importance is the expectation, as part of each class, that you will discuss and examine your own leadership and management practice in considering an array of global business practice issues.
You will be asked for on-going feedback in addition to a formal evaluation at the end of the semester

You will be supplied with courseware that includes learning resources. Courseware will identify required pre-reading.
An extensive DLS site is also established for you.
Overview of Assessment
Assessment may include an individual project, individual presentation, group report, group presentation, essay, class participation and tests.
