Course Description

The course aims to introduce students to the multi-facetted nature of change associated with globalisation. The course examines the impact of the increased interaction, or integration, of national business systems through the growth of international trade and investment, the creation of new global legal institutions and norms, the harmonisation of international financial reporting standards, regulations, rules and legal practices, the development of international rules for bankruptcy, intellectual property, banking procedures and many other areas of corporate law as well as the cross-border social, cultural and technological exchange that are part of the phenomenon of globalisation. Focus will be placed on the business, political, legal, social, cultural and technological changes that arise as a consequence of globalisation and their impact on the conduct of business, the making of business decisions and managing people in a global business environment. This course will examine these changes as they impact on Thailand.

This course is relevant for both post-graduate and undergraduate students across industries, in both public and private sectors, and in both large and small business.

The course provides an opportunity for students to analyse the theory and practice of global business change in the context of an offshore study tour to Thailand. The course will expose students to a cultural and business environment that is different from that of Australia. This will enable students to develop their understanding of cross-cultural differences and to appreciate the different cultural perspectives and business practices that apply in Thailand. This experience is intended to equip students with key skills necessary to function in a global market place.

Overview of Learning Activities

This course introduces a range of issues related to the general topic of globalisation. These issues are analysed from a broad global perspective.

During the on-shore and offshore experience, student will engage in experiential learning activities that are designed to explore cross-cultural, social, business, technological, political, environmental and ethical issues associated with engaging in business in a global knowledge economy, in particular Thailand.

The on-shore part of the course consists of a number of intensive experiential learning workshops before and after the offshore study abroad component in Thailand.

The study abroad component consists of a two week intensive teaching and learning experience in Thailand. Students will attend seminars at Thammasat University, attend presentations and panel discussions at a number of Thai business, industry, government as well as international organisations and cultural sites.

Whilst in Thailand, at Thammasat University and the various site organisations, students will be required to participate in discussions with host presenters and a participation mark will be given to encourage such activities. Students will be expected to maintain a reflective journal and obtain such information that will enable the completion of a research paper on return to Australia.

Overview of Assessment

The assessment is made up of both individual and group work and may include  presentations, participation, reflective learning journal and research papers.
