Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

There is an assumed knowledge of basic computer literacy.
Please be aware that this course forms part of AD006 (Associate Degree in Information Technology) and is not part of the BP162 (Bachelor of Information Technology) study plan. Also, it will follow the Vocational Education calendar dates and not the Higher Ed semester dates which means that classes will start 3 weeks earlier. The timetable is published under the Vocational Education timetable link and is not available on STS. If you enrol in this course as an elective please check with your program coordinator before commencement as this is not a bachelor course.

Course Description

Databases and database technology are having a major impact on the growing use of computers. This course is an introduction to principles, use and applications of database systems.
On completion of the course you will be able to understand the purposes for which databases are used, design and create databases, query/extract information from databases and understand in broad terms how database systems work.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:
1.Use the principles underlying database systems and explain the purposes for which they are used.
2.Describe the relational model and model data as relations.
3.Create description of a relational database using Entity Relationship Model.
4.Formulate queries in relational algebra and use SQL to manipulate data in relational database..
5.Define views and their purposes and formulate and interpret queries on views.
6.Create procedures to manipulate data in database

Overview of Learning Activities

You will learn through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and laboratory exercises.

Lectures: Key concepts are explained, course material is presented, and the subject matter is illustrated with demonstrations and examples.

The Tutorial/Laboratory sessions will provide you with hands-on experience in using SQL Server. They will focus on designing a database based on a given scenario.

Overview of Learning Resources

You will make use of computer laboratories and relevant software provided by the School. All materials will be provided online through myRMIT.
Lists of relevant textbooks, reference texts, resources in the Library and relevant internet sites will be provided.

Assessment tasks

To pass this course you must achieve a total score of at least 50%. 

Assessment Task 1: Assignments

This assessment task consists of two assignments. The Assignment 1 is an early assessment task.

Weighting towards final grade (%): 30% (5% + 25%)

This assessment task supports CLOs 1-6


Assessment Task 2: Practical Tests

This assessment task consists of two practical tests.

Weighting towards final grade (%): 30% (15% + 15%)

This assessment task supports CLOs 4-6

Assessment Task 3: Final Written Exam

Weighting towards final grade (%): 40%

This assessment task supports CLOs 1-6
