Course Description
In this course you will examine a range of critical approaches within media and cultural studies frameworks to examine contemporary Asian popular culture. You will consider how popular cultures are constructed, marketed and then consumed by their audiences. You will explore the ways in which popular culture is used within Asian contexts both by individuals and in public discourses, through the examination of artefacts, media and practices.

If you are enrolled in this course as a contextual studies course you will develop the following program learning outcome:
- Identify, evaluate and critically analyse cultural, historical and theoretical practices which contextualise your professional practice and further study.
For students enrolled in the Bachelor of Communication - Professional Communication (BP222SIM), you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Critically analyse and apply a diverse and industry relevant body of knowledge and skills to the field of media and communications in a global context
- Critically analyse, synthesize and reflect on professional communication in both local and international contexts

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify issues and debates around how popular culture is constructed, marketed and consumed in Asia.
- Describe and apply a range of theoretical and historical perspectives on Asian popular culture.
- Discuss the local and global aspects of culture with reference to Asian social, economic and political contexts.
- Illustrate and analyse the relationship of popular culture to the practice of the everyday and ordinary within Asia.
