Course Description

This third year course will focus on the professional practice of psychology in society and organisations. It will help you examine the different ways in which psychologists contribute to society and help you prepare for your graduation from the program. The course will explore cross cultural issues and the importance of intercultural diversity and indigenous contributions.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the development of the Program Learning Outcomes in the following way:

  • PLO 1:  Understand appropriate and relevant fundamental and applied evidence based knowledge and undertake lifelong learning to improve personal and professional practice 
  • PLO 4: Engage in dialogue with a diverse range of people and communicate in a broad range of forms (written, electronic, graphic, oral) to meet the circumstances of the situation and the capabilities of the audience.
  • PLO 5: Maintains tolerance and respect for individuals and  groups from diverse backgrounds, holding diverse values, adhering to professional expectations and demonstrating ethical behaviour.


On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Explain the organisation and regulation of psychology as a discipline in Australia.
  2. Define psychological literacies and evaluate the extent to which you have developed these over the course of your undergraduate psychology education.
  3. Prepare a competent job application as a psychology graduate.
  4. Compare and contrast the practice of psychology in a range of areas including mental health, education, organisations, sport, communities and in health and cultural settings.


Overview of Learning Activities

Your learning activities require your attendance at a two hour seminar per week. These sessions will be delivered using a variety of techniques. You can therefore expect multimedia delivery strategies that will include video, guest speakers, and small group discussions. You will be required to contribute to these sessions in the form of role-play, discussion, critical appraisal and problem solving.

The learning resources associated with this course chosen will be digitally available to you. Resources will be available via myRMIT Studies. Readings for each week will be provided online. Practice learning activities will be provided in a variety of ways, including simulated learning activities. RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.
