Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Satisfactorily completion of the Foundations of Practice 1 & 2, Assessment & Intervention 1 & 2, Specialist Practice 1 & 2, and Internal Practicum 1, 2, 3 & 4. Enrolment in this advanced training unit requires established psychological skills and knowledge in diagnosis, assessment, and intervention as well as a demonstrated knowledge of professional ethical standards.
Course Description
This course is undertaken in Semester 1 of the third year of the Doctorate in Psychology for both professional training streams. It comprises the following units:
- Advanced Clinical Skills 1
- Specialised Topics in Research
Advanced Doctoral Training 1 is designed to extend students’ conceptual and practical knowledge with a specific aim of them acquiring the knowledge necessary for them to fulfil future leadership roles in professional practice and case supervision.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Students will develop personal and professional awareness and skills in facilitation.
Students will develop skills in leading peer and staff participatory seminars that discuss issues of significant theoretical and clinical relevance. Students will also acquire practitioner level knowledge about the theoretical and practical underpinnings of conducting sound clinical supervision. Students will also extend their theoretical and conceptual understanding of research evaluation and design and its role in informing professional practice.

Learning experiences and activities vary according the specific unit of study undertaken and include participation in seminars, discussion, supervision workshop, and personal study.
Overview of Learning Resources
For all units, students will receive guidance from lecturers in terms of specific readings, references, and library resources. Guidance is also given in terms of relevant online resources and agencies.
Overview of Assessment
The assessment tasks vary according to the specific unit being examined. All assessments are linked logically to the learning objectives for each unit. Assessments include formal presentations, seminar participation and discussion, workshop participation and multiple choice tests.
