Course Description

This course supports students in proposing and negotiating an action research project in an organisational setting.
They learn through experience the challenges of gaining participation within organisational settings
The Course also supports students in their choice of data collection methods and subsequent analysis and interpretation of the data 

If you are undertaking this course in Melbourne from semester 2, 2012 onwards your teacher will advise you if you require access to a computer for the course. It is recommended that you have access to a mobile computing device to allow greater flexibility in terms of where you can work on campus outside class times.

On completing this course you will be able to:
• Successfully negotiate a collaborative action research project in an organisational setting
• Present oneself as professionally competent to assist an organisation through an action research project
• Commence the implementation of a negotiated research proposal in an organisational setting
• Use systems theory to identify and negotiate boundaries relevant to the success of a collaborative research project
• Use data generated in managing boundary negotiations in interpreting system dynamics
• Assess the rigour of the choice data collection methods
• Select the relevant themes and working hypotheses that emerge from the data
• Design qualitative data collection methods appropriate to an organisational problem
• Collect research data in a rigorous, professional and ethical manner
• Analyse qualitative data

Discussion of relevant case studies, developing a research proposal & identifying potential research settings
Peer review and supervised reflection on field experience of negotiating entry to an organisational setting

Active participation in 3 workshops culminating in written papers covering the theoretical basis of collaborative action research, relevant research designs and issues in negotiating entry to a research site.
