Course Description

Design Process stimulates student exploration of design processes through studio-based design projects encouraging creative conceptual thinking and experimentation. Through the projects you will acquire a repertoire of design skills and knowledge necessary to undertake design work from conception through to realisation.
This course aims to expand your understandings and articulation of core principles of Furniture Design activity. The focus will be on design processes: research, creative thinking, conceptualisation, problem solving, the articulation and realisation of ideas (design) through multiple mediums. Key to this is to enable your with a level of autonomy and self-discipline, and the capacity to work productively and creatively with others.


 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) of the AD007 Associate Degree in Design (Furniture Design):

1. Explore materials and modern manufacturing methods to develop concepts to proposal or prototype for both local and international corporate or individual clients
2. Design and realise innovative and novel furniture products as part of a collaborative team and as an independent designer
4. Identify and combine principles and concepts in art and design, the craft of making, the technologies of creation and manufacture together with ergonomic factors to develop furniture solutions to complex and varied problems
5. Evaluate your own work, ideas and concepts, including self, peer and industry critique
6. Articulate and transmit design ideas and details through a variety of methods and technologies to be able to present design outcomes for others to understand and engage with
8. Apply initiative and judgment in exploration in, planning of, problem solving and decision making in your work


Upon successful completion of this course, you should have an understanding of:
1. Analyse relevant information on product needs and terms of a brief.
2. Imaginatively generate options.
3. Illustrate ideas to convey concepts to others.
4. Review and evaluate ideas against an original brief or inspiration.
5. Generate new ideas, enhance or combine ideas to improve concepts from the original brief and/or inspirational information


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as:
• Studio based discussion and development of design ideas with teachers and peers.
• Topic specific seminars; space to introduce, explore and extend key course topics, theories and design projects.
• Group-based learning; group discussion, collaborative projects and peer critique.
• Presentations; the communication of your ideas to peers and teachers.


Negotiated learning – during the program you will have the opportunity to negotiate project outcomes in consultation with your teachers.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided including books, references and web sources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning. Student learning resources also include access to computer laboratories and relevant software.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester and feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
