Course Description
In this course you will focus on the principles of inclusion and their application in educational settings. In this course you will examine current policies and theoretical foundations with the aim of developing your knowledge and skills of inclusive education. This course will focus on planning an inclusive curriculum and its implementation in classroom settings and developing knowledge and awareness of key stakeholders’ perspectives in order to provide rich learning experiences for children with special needs.
This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Your learning in this course is focused on development of the following program learning outcomes.
1. Engage with diverse learners in a range of educational contexts in order to develop skills and knowledge for flexible and adaptable participation in professional communities of practice. 2. Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.4. Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse educational contexts.
6. Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.
7. Apply initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision making to enhance your practice and continuing professional development.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Apply government policy and theoretical foundations of inclusion
2. Examine the complexity of developing professional relationships with support teams as well as families, medical and paramedical support, specialists, teacher aides, parent helpers and other educational stakeholders to assist students through the educational experience
3. Observe, assess and plan for individual learners in a group setting
4. Develop individual learning plans based on whole-school curriculum planning
5. Design educational contexts that optimise learning and enhance social opportunities for all learners
6. Plan for and design inclusive education environments for learning
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities including lectures, tutorials workshops, online discussions, curriculum design and readings in order to support the development of the learning outcomes. Work integrated learning is a major teaching and learning theme for this course and it puts you at the centre of the learning process and makes you responsible for your learning. This teaching team will support you in the development, progress and completion of your assessment tasks. This course involves the successful completion of professional experience; learning activities will ask you to link theory with practical areas of the profession in a variety of educational settings.

Assessment in this course is directly connected to your successful participation in professional experience. The end-of-placement report from your supervising teacher(s) on your professional development and participation in professional experience is an important component of your assessment. It will provide evidence of your ability to demonstrate the relevant professional practices and course learning outcomes specifically associated with the assessment tasks in the course.
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks. If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods.
