Course Description

This course will introduce you to the role and function of therapeutic agents as a component of the patient treatment regime. You will construct your learning within an ethical framework and the legislative constraints of medication administration for controlled therapeutic substances in the Australian context. The role of the interdisciplinary team in the care of the patient, and collaboration between the nurse and pharmacist in the management of medication regimes for patients is also examined.

This course contributes to Program Learning Outcomes for BP032 (Bachelor of Nursing) in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016):

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Identify the Australian legislative framework for controlled substances from which the prescribing, dispensing and administration constraints are identified.
  2. Review the role of the nurse in the safe administration of medications as a part of the multidisciplinary health care team.
  3. Explain the concepts of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in the prescription of medications for specific disease processes.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge and skills associated with the administration of therapeutic substances in the patient care context.
  5. Outline risk minimisation strategies associated with the handling and management of specific therapeutic substances.
  6. Discuss the concept of inter disciplinary care and the collaborative role of the pharmacist and the nurse clinician in the patient care episode.


Overview of Learning Activities

This course will use a range of learning activities including both lectures and self-directed learning.

Learning activities may include modalities such as lectures, podcasts, Lectopia, Wikis and discussion board forums. Lecture material may be delivered using a variety of flexible learning modes. 

You will undertake the equivalent of 48 hours of lectures (face-to-face and/or flexible delivery) over the semester. In addition, you can expect to spend a minimum of 5 hours per week in independent study.
