Course Description

Databases are at the core of almost all information systems. This course introduces the key concepts involved in designing and building databases, within the context of business information systems. The course aims to equip you with the skills required to design and implement data based solutions for problems commonly found in business.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

CLO1 Employ existing database models to address issues commonly encountered in business. CLO2 Given a set of business requirements, create a design for a moderately complex database model. CLO3 Express the design of database systems using relational models and entity relationship diagrams. CLO4 Implement a data model using a data definition language to create a database. CLO5 Manage data in a database system by using data manipulation language (Structured Query Language). CLO6 Respond to business requirements to produce information from a database system using Structured Query Language.

In this course you will be encouraged to be an active learner. Your learning will be supported through various in-class and online activities comprising individual and group work. These may include quizzes; assignments; prescribed readings; sourcing, researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; conducting presentations; producing written work and collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects.

In addition to topic notes; assessment details and a study schedule you may also be provided with links to relevant online information; readings; audio and video clips and communication tools to facilitate collaboration with your peers and to share information.
