Course Description

This course provides an introduction to key Arts concepts and to developmentally appropriate and inclusive teaching methodologies, through practical workshops, arts site visits, online delivery and individual research. With reference to relevant curriculum documents, students will begin to develop materials suitable for learning in the arts by students of primary school age.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the conclusion of this course students are expected be able to:

  • Design and implement basic arts based programs of work suited to primary school age children
  • Reflect upon the arts as an integral component of an individual’s learning across the curriculum
  • Identify best practice regarding pedagogy in arts education
  • Explore and experiment with techniques and personal expression in the arts
  • Reflect upon and effect change in personal arts learning experiences
  • Articulate the benefits and attributes of arts-based learning
  • Use information technology/communication technology as a resource for locating information and creative ideas and demonstrate critical awareness in the use of ICT
  • Work cooperatively in groups in class workshops
  • Work independently in researching material relevant to arts teaching and practice


ICT Outcomes
At the conclusion of this course, students will have also developed the following ICT capabilities:

  • Understandings of the role of ICT in learning and implications for the classroom.
  • Awareness of a range of contemporary ICT resources suitable for the classroom.
  • Understanding of how ICT resources can be integrated in meaningful ways that take into account students existing and diverse technological skills and to produce engaging and challenging curriculum.

Overview of Learning Activities

Students will participate in practical workshops, in-field observation, visits to arts venues, online delivery and individual research as applicable. The details relevant to each of the four arts areas will be negotiated with individual lecturers during the first week of class. After this negotiation, a work plan for the semester will be established.


Overview of Learning Resources

References and readings will be advised by individual lecturers. Students are also expected to refer to arts education texts, current curriculum documents and Journals from the RMIT library and to access online material.

Assessment for this course is negotiated with the lecturer and related to a discipline-specific task/s within a visual and/or performing area of the arts.
