Course Description

The building industry is under increasing pressure to improve the sustainability performance of buildings. This presents a significant innovation challenge for building designers, developers and managers
In this course you will develop your understanding of the context, principles and practice of environmentally sustainable design (ESD), with an emphasis on the energy and environmental performance of buildings. You will further develop your understanding of the strategies used in environmentally sustainable design and the performance assessment frameworks used to determine the sustainability of the built environment.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

For those of you in MC209 Master of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building and GD189 Graduate Diploma in Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building, this course will help you develop the program level outcomes:

PLO1: Analyse, synthesise and apply sustainable building theory and principles to address industry issues, and implement new directions in sustainable building design

PLO2: Professionally communicate your ideas and strategies, justifying decisions to diverse stakeholders, including government and industry stakeholders.

PLO3:  Employ your knowledge of sustainable building and performance theory, and leading technologies, to develop solutions that respond to the diverse needs of sustainable building project stakeholders.

PLO5: Critically examine and reflect on your work, and sustainable building theory, to question accepted building solutions, design strategies, design practices and decision making approaches

For those of you in GC163 Graduate Certificate in Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building, this course will help you develop the program level outcomes:

PLO1: Analyse, synthesise and apply sustainable building theory and principles to address industry issues, and implement new directions in sustainable building design.

PLO2: Professionally communicate your ideas and strategies, justifying decisions to diverse stakeholders, including government and industry stakeholders.

PLO4: Work autonomously and utilise effective team work to plan sustainable building projects, responsive to the needs of diverse stakeholders

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Identify the characteristics of best-practice in sustainable building initiatives
  2. Apply sustainability criteria to assess the performance of a building
  3. Identify and analyse effective strategies for achieving sustainable buildings and sustainable design outcomes
  4. Critically analyse Australian sustainability policy and project initiatives
  5. Evaluate and communicate the effectiveness of current sustainability initiatives and assess whether these initiatives are operating in an effective sustainability framework

Overview of Learning Activities

The course consists of online course materials and face to face sessions. You will be engaged in hands-on face to face and online interactive class activities and discussions.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.
As part of the learning in this course you will be directed to lecture notes and other related information through links in MyRMIT. Resources you will utlise in this course include lecture notes, case studies, software package and library resources.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.  Assessment consists of:

Task 1: Group work: Explore and critique different definitions of sustainable development and apply your definition to an exemplar sustainable building to evaluate how well the exemplar engages with key sustainability ideas. 30% weighting. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4 and CLO5.

Task 2: Individual work: Analyse sustainability performance of different building elements and designs to explore the implications of design and construction decisions. 35% weighting. CLO1, CLO3 and CLO5.

Task 3: Individual work: Analyse a proposed development masterplan for a new neighbourhood and prepare a report as an Ecologically Sustainable Development Consultant for the local council exploring opportunities for improved sustainability outcomes. 35% weighting. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4 and CLO5.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

Equitable Learning Services

Equitable Learning Services (ELS) provide support and equal opportunities for students with a disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition and primary carers of individuals with a disability. You can contact the ELS if you would like to find out more: https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services. You can also contact the course coordinator or the program coordinator if you would like to find out more.

An assessment charter (http://mams.rmit.edu.au/kh6a3ly2wi2h1.pdf) summarises your responsibilities as an RMIT student as well as those of your teaching staff.

Your course assessment conforms to RMIT assessment principles, regulations, policies and procedures which are described and referenced in a single document: http://www.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=ln1kd66y87rc.
