No prior capabilities are required, although this course draws on learnings and skills from other completed MBA courses.

Course Description

The course is intended to encourage you to think creatively about management and organizations, with emphasis on understanding yourself and your relationships with staff, colleagues, and the wider environment. You will be expected to achieve such outcomes from the perspective of a senior business manager and decision-maker and apply these to a contemporary workplace situation. This course aims to provide you with an opportunity to integrate and apply learning from previous courses in the Master of Business Administration program. The integration of work-based learning and academic learning, commonly referred to as Work Integrated Learning (WIL), will allow you to solve authentic business problems or address real issues faced in organisations.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

You will be able to:

undertake research using a recognised methodology and framework;

apply theory and synthesise literature in a field of study;

gather, analyse and interpret data;

critically analyse a body of literature relevant to a business problem;

make a written presentation of findings appropriate to postgraduate study;

apply research skills in a business context.

A research project report and presentation on a business question will be prepared and presented as a consultancy report in a professional manner. 

Overview of Learning Activities

This course involves learning about research methods.  Students will then work on a research project in student teams (with staff oversight).  Selection of an appropriate research question, research methodology and methods, will involve discussion and agreement between students and academic staff.  Students wil be involved in meetings and consultations with client managers, and verbal and written presentations.

Overview of Learning Resources

The RMIT Library has available relevant texts and, importantly, an array of on-line journals that can provide specific support for learning, use, methodology, methods of data gathering and write up of a particular research report.  These resources should be used throughout your project development and completion.  The Business Style Manual should also be used for points on academic writing and referencing.

Overview of Assessment

Assessments could include any of the following:

a research proposal or research plan;

a review of literature relevant to the research project;

presentations regarding research topic, processes, methodology and/or research outcomes;

production of a final research project report or article.
