You should have satisfactorily completed two years of your program before you commence this course.  

This capstone course is completed in the 3rd year of your program 


Course Description

This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience.

This course will enable you to engage in a work situation in a relevant organisation under the supervision of an approved field tutor. The experience you gain should assist you to make informed choices with respect to employment at the end of your studies. You will also gain expertise in completing job applications and an appreciation of workplace OH&S issues. Central to internship is learning by observation, participation in teams and undertaking work in employment or community organisations.

You may complete your internship by:

1. Placement within a relevant organisation for 35 - 50 days depending on the requirements of the individual organisation;

OR

2. Successful applicants may also complete a 50 day internship with the Bridge of Hope Innocence Initiative at RMIT, OR the Criminal Case Review Project.

Variations to these requirements must be negotiated with the JLWIL co-ordinator.

Your internship can be completed within Australia or in another country in an organisation or agency which is aligned with your study interests and career aspirations.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes 

In course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:  

 
  1. Effectively apply the principles, theories and philosophies of the criminal justice system in practical contexts
  2. Reflect on and implement ethical practice and social responsibility in diverse criminal justice settings
  3. Contextualise specific criminal justice-based knowledge according to socially and culturally diverse environments 
  4. Assist in the identification of needs and the planning of research in the criminal justice field  


Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  1. Analyse and critique professional practice in an organisation relevant to the justice sector and your career interests  
  2. Explain the organisational structure of the organisation and the role and function of employees working in the area 
  3. Identify good teamwork principles and practices and group dynamics
  4. Critically reflect on theories, approaches and research informing practice in the organisation
  5. Critique the OH&S practices of the organisation;
  6. Demonstrate newly acquired skills resulting from the experience of professional practice
  7. Utilise effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills relevant to the chosen workplace
  8. Reflect on and self-appraise your professional learning and development


Overview of Learning Activities

RMIT University is committed to supporting student diversity and inclusion and provides support to students with a disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition. Students can register with the Equitable Learning Services (ELS) who will work with the student to develop an Equitable Learning Plan (ELP) to be shared with their School. The plan will include any adjustments that are required for study and/or assessment conditions. 

In this course, you will be provided with support to source a placement. Some placements will be advertised by the School, which students can apply for, and the School will allocate or shortlist students for these placements.   

Learning is predominantly situated within a Justice organisation where you will undertake supervised work duties. Activities include the field placement, interactive class activities, guest speakers, presentations, workshops and student lead discussions. You will be supported through placement preparation and planning in consultation with the Criminal Justice Studies WIL team and other relevant staff. 

Students cannot commence their WIL activity until they have received a confirmation email from the School, with a copy of their approved [WIL agreement/Student Undertaking]. Supervision arrangements must be outlined in the WIL Agreement/Student Undertaking. 

 
WIL activities that are based overseas or are with an international partner organisation have additional requirements that must be met before an overseas placement can be approved. For more information, please submit a query through Student Connect. 

Students, who are approved to undertake a WIL activity overseas, must register with the Global Experiences team via Mobi. 


Overview of Learning Resources

You will be given access to a wide range of resources through the Canvas student portal, myRMIT, and RMIT Library resources. You will be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.  You are also expected to examine organisational documents whilst on placement to gain a broader understanding of the organisation and workforce. Students who complete a placement with the Bridge of Hope Innocence Initiative or the Criminal Case Review Project at RMIT will be provided with relevant literature and other resources on site. 

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

1: Job Application, 25%,  CLO2, CLO3, CLO6 and CLO7 

2: Interview, 25%,  CLO2, CLO3, CLO6 and CLO7 

3: Learning plan, 50%, CLO1 – CLO5, CLO8
