Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
There are no pre-requisite courses. It is assumed that you have sufficient technical knowledge to undertake the project from your previous engineering studies.
Course Description
EEET2346 is the first semester of your two-semester Professional Engineering Project experience at the School of Engineering. Next semester you will continue in EEET2347 to complete your Professional Engineering Project work. This semester you will work in a set team to develop an Electrical/Electronic/Communication Engineering product idea. It is expected that by the end of this semester your team will have made significant progress in terms of designing and building your team's product. At the end of next semester your team will demonstrate your product at the School of Engineering Trade Fair, which is usually attended and judged by many industry representatives. For the duration of the Professional Engineering Project your team will be assigned an academic staff member, who will act as your team's mentor.
The course objectives are to:
• Introduce you to engineering projects and to engineering research projects
• Provide you with learning outcomes related to completion of a team project activity
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for Master of Engineering:
- Be able to apply problem solving approaches to work challenges and make decisions using sound engineering methodologies
- Be able to apply a systematic design approach to engineering projects and have strong research and design skills in their stream
- Communicate effectively across all modes: listen, speak, write and draw
- Apply the principles of lifelong learning to any new challenge
- Balance the technical, economic, social and ethical demands of a problem in sustainable and culturally sensitive ways
On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Apply critical and creative thinking in the design of engineering projects. Apply knowledge of the ‘real world’ situations that a professional engineer can encounter.
- Plan and manage your time effectively as an individual and as a team. Design and develop a functional product prototype while working in a team. Manage any disputes and conflicts within and outside of your team.
- Consider the business context and commercial positioning of designed prototype device or system.
- Utilise fundamental knowledge and skills in engineering and apply it effectively to a project.
- Reflect on your own and your peers technical and non-technical learning.
- Present your work to your peers, academics, general and industry community.
Overview of Learning Activities
The course provides experiences that meet the requirements of the RMIT Work Integrated Learning (WIL) policy. The course activities include:
- Lectures and sessions on project planning and execution, and other topics associated with Engineering Design.
- Team-based engineering project (which is a problem-based learning activity) enabling you to demonstrate your ability to work effectively as a member of a team in order to successfully design and build a product.
- It is expected that your team will meet with your mentor regularly. This will provide your team with the appropriate guidance and critique to help you in your project work.
Overview of Learning Resources
The lecture schedule and lecture materials together with the project part of the course will be accessible to you online through ’myRMIT’ Studies. It will include all the information, instructions, guidelines, assessment criteria, marking sheets, assessment deliverables, and other detailed information. In the lecture part of this course, you will be presented with non-technical type topics. These topics cover specialised knowledge tools that a professional engineer must be equipped with in order to be successful in today’s competitive engineering marketplace.
Overview of Assessment
This course has no hurdle requirements.
The assessment for this course will be conducted by academic staff, weighted by your team contribution as assessed by your peers.
