Course Description
This course introduces you to the human body and how it works. The structure and function of specific organs and body systems will be studied. You will also learn the principle of homeostasis in the control of physiological systems of the body. Key topics include: Introduction to the Human body and homeostasis; Integumentary system; Musculo-Skeletal system; Nervous system; Endocrine system; Cardiovascular system; Lymphatic system and Immunity; Respiratory system; Digestive system; Urinary system and fluid balance.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for AD012 Associate Degree in Applied Science:
- Knowledge Capability: develop an understanding of appropriate and relevant fundamental and applied scientific knowledge with the ability to use and apply that knowledge in a wide range of situations, including new situations within the professional discipline
5. Teamwork: contribute in a constructive manner to group and team activities and decision making processes
On completion of this course you should be able to:
1. use appropriate terminology to effectively communicate information related to Anatomy and Physiology.
2. recognise anatomical structures and explain physiological functions of human body systems.
3. demonstrate literacy skills to analyse and interpret information and use resources related to Anatomy and Physiology.
4. use critical thinking and problem solving skills and express ideas through written, oral and visual communication.
Overview of Learning Activities
In this course you will learn through the following activities:
• Laboratory exercises: to give you skills in: observation and scientific method, routine laboratory and dissection techniques, working with others and working cooperatively
• Face to face teaching: to obtain an understanding of basic concepts of anatomy and physiology that are required to enhance further education and careers in this field.
• Personal reading (e.g. prescribed sections of textbooks and relevant articles): to reinforce/strengthen your understanding of principles and applications of anatomy & physiology.
• Virtual labs and videos: to understand the key biological concepts of human anatomy and physiology, and practical applications, and how to apply theory to practice. You are encouraged to watch videos on special topics available in RMIT library.
• Group work and peer facilitation: to enhance a deep understanding of a range of issues in anatomy and physiology and develop communication and cooperative learning skills.
