Assumed knowledge:
Students must have passed all first year courses and be able to demonstrate the ability to carry out experiments, follow protocols and at all times to work safely in the laboratory in second year laboratory classes
Students who do not meet these requirements may be directed to amend their enrolment
Course Description
This course includes a Work Integrated Learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real workplace context and where feedback from industry is integral to your experience.
You will undertake 10-20 days work placement in a relevant organisation. RMIT staff will assist you in finding an appropriate placement.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for AD012 Associate Degree in Applied Science:
3. Problem Solving: The ability to apply scientific principles and methods to identify and solve problems associated with a particular area of professional expertise.
4. Communication Capability: being able to communicate by means of oral, written, symbolic and pictorial presentations to a wide range of audience types as well as an understanding of t.he systems of communication in science.
5.Teamwork Capability; Laboratory work, by its very nature, involves the ability to work well as part of a team. You will learn to contribute in a constructive manner to group and team activities and decision making processes.
6. Professional work practices: This includes the ability to be self-motivated and responsible for personal actions and learning. It will be built on an understanding of the legal and ethical framework that underpins your professional area of work.
On completion of this course you should be able to:
- Describe the structure & functions of the host organisation
- Communicate, manage your time, work as part of a team and work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds in different workplace contexts
- Engage in problem solving activities
- Set professional goals
- Work safely and follow standard operating procedures
- Communicate in written and oral form to reflect on your experience in industry
Overview of Learning Activities
In this course you will learn through undertaking a 10-20 day workplacement. Prior to the placement you will participate in workshops such as:
- using Inplace software
- writing resumes and covering letters
- networking / using LinkedIn
