Course Description

This course will introduce you to the real world of working in a laboratory. You will learn about the operation of a laboratory from the perspectives of occupational health & safety, research skills, quality processes, analysing data, teamwork and appropriate communication. The skills you gain in this course will be used in a range of other courses.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for AD012P24 Associate Degree in Applied Science
4. Communication Capability: be able to communicate by means of oral, written, symbolic and pictorial presentations to a wide range of audience types as well as an understanding of the systems of communication in science.
5. Teamwork: contribute in a constructive manner to group and team activities and decision making processes
6. Professional work practices: be self-motivated and responsible for personal actions and learning. This will be built on an understanding of the legal and ethical framework that underpins your professional area of work.


On completion of this course you should be able to:
1. research and communicate scientific information
2. play an active role in contributing to and maintaining Occupational Health & Safety processes
3. analyse and interpret experimental data
4. work independently as well as co-operatively in a team.


Overview of Learning Activities

In this course you will learn through the following activities:
• Face to face teaching: to develop an understanding of occupational health and safety (OHS) principles/requirements as applied to the scientific workplace, and requirements for laboratory operations
• Personal reading (e.g. prescribed sections of textbooks and relevant articles): to reinforce/strengthen your understanding of principles and applications.
• Simulation, videos, and laboratory sessions: to understand the key concepts of OHS and practical laboratory applications, and how to apply theory to practice. The laboratory work/simulations allow you to develop skills in understanding principles.
• Research and report presentation: You will be expected to read extensively in a selected discipline area and write a comprehensive critical review of the literature and present in a report form.
• Group work


Overview of Learning Resources

Two hours of face to face classes per week are scheduled. In addition you can expect to spend a minimum of two hours per week in independent study.
You will need to access the student learning system on a weekly basis to prepare for class. You will also need to read sections of State or territory workplace health and safety legislation, literature available from relevant Workplace Authorities and Worksafe publications.
