Course Description

This course enables Executive MBA students to identify and reflect on their capabilities and development needs as ethical leaders, and the consequent implications for designing their own professional leadership development. During this course, students examine key literature and cases related to the effective practice of ethical leadership. Just as importantly, the current and previous workplace experiences of students provide them with opportunities to observe and attempt to understand leadership behaviour. Whether students are relating course concepts to their own leadership, or to the leadership of people they report to, or to the complexities of a case example, the opportunities for reflection and for learning-in-action can be embraced.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

-

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

CLO1: Analyse leadership styles in a range of organisational settings with consideration of ethical ramification of action.

CLO2: Reflect on personal strengths and areas of challenge and design evidencebased plans to effectively self-manage these towards improved leadership practice.

CLO3: Critically evaluate how effectively leaders encountered in case studies and in the workplace are able to diagnose and ethically improve the key areas of organisational functioning.

CLO4: Appraise ways in which leadership can contribute to corporate social responsibility.

CLO5: Demonstrate interpersonal skills and persuasive communication.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be encouraged to critically compare and contrast what is happening in your workplace with what you are learning from the course reading materials. To facilitate that learning process, it is important that you contribute to each discussion topic having read the relevant journal articles and materials. Above all, the learning activities are designed to maximize the likelihood that you will not only understand the course reading materials but also apply those materials to improving your own practice as an ethical leader. It is essential that you actively prepare for and participate in the face-to-face sessions for this course. You are expected to learn to monitor and discuss your own learning and collaborate with other students to discover and engage in leadership thinking that can be applied to any business situation and context. The course involves substantial interaction with the larger cohort, and you will be expected to demonstrate effective collaboration skills and to work efficiently and effectively with others to achieve outcomes greater than those that you might have achieved alone. The course also involves presentations where students are expected to develop both effective oral presentation skills, and feedback skills to critique, support and learn from others.

Overview of Learning Resources

Various learning resources are available online through MyRMIT Studies\Canvas. The lecture notes and workshop notes are posted on Canvas.

Resources are also available online through RMIT Library databases and other facilities. Visit the RMIT library website for further details. Assistance is available online via our chat and email services, face to face at our campus libraries or via the telephone on (03) 9925 2020.

Additional resources and/or sources to assist your learning will be identified by your course coordinator and will be made available to you as required during the teaching period.
