- BUIL1241 Structures and Materials 1.
before you commence this course.

This course will integrate your knowledge and understanding of fundamentals of construction technology and processes. Specifically, this course emphasises the role of materials, methods, techniques and sequencing in the construction of buildings. Through your critical engagement in case studies you will consider the environmental impact of construction processes. Your developed knowledge of construction processes will include understanding the role of planning, scheduling and estimating in the effective management of construction resources.

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- PLO1: Determine and apply knowledge of complex construction management theory to your professional practice and/or further study
- PLO2: Professionally communicate to a range of audiences, demonstrating in depth knowledge of the discipline and of the needs of diverse construction management stakeholders
- PLO3: Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to analyse, synthesise and apply theoretical knowledge, and technical skills, to formulate evidenced based solutions to industry problems or issues
- PLO4: Utilise appropriate methods and techniques to design and /or execute research based or professionally focused construction management projects, demonstrating capacity for independent and collaborative learning, addressing real world industry issues
- PLO5: Collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate intellectual independence and autonomy to solve problems and/or address industry issues and imperatives
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- CLO1: Describe the processes and technologies of construction
- CLO2: Utilise commercially available software to produce project documentation for a low-rise residential building
- CLO3: Analyse how building systems are constructed and impact on the environment , and the OHS implications.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will engage in a range of learning activities in this course including lectures, and class discussions designed to support your active learning through solving examples in class. Additional worked examples will be provided online to further support you to further develop your problem-solving skills. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Task 1: Group work: for given scenarios, prepare a report that identifies several energy efficiency requirements in the National Construction Code and investigates and simulates strategies for meeting these requirements. 34% Weighting. CLO1, CLO3.
Task 2: Group work: Prepare a report concerning different aspects of production, planning and control. 33% Weighting. CLO2, CLO3.
Task 3: Group work: prepare a report that includes different aspects of OH&S in the area of Construction Management to analyse OH&S specific issues by applying theoretical knowledge. 33% Weighting. CLO3.
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
